Welcome to Portugal! Upon arrival at Lisbon Airport make your way to the Budget car-hire desk, pick up your rental car and drive north of Lisbon to the Medieval walled town of Óbidos, known for its typical white houses, flowered windows and narrow cobblestone streets. Settle into your hotel and then enjoy the lovely surrounding landscape and perhaps visit the national monuments in nearby Batalha & Alcobaça and the picturesque fishing town of Nazaré. Overnight in Óbidos.
Continue your journey north to Porto, a captivating city located on the right bank of the Douro River, which flows through Portugal’s renowned Port wine region. During your three-night stay in Porto, take time to explore the city’s rich heritage and vibrant atmosphere. The historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is filled with remarkable monuments, narrow streets, and stunning river views.
Cross the river to visit one of the famous Port wine cellars, or enjoy a cruise along the Douro River, offering breathtaking perspectives of the old city. We also recommend a full-day excursion to Guimarães, known as the birthplace of Portugal, featuring a well-preserved medieval castle and historic charm. Continue to Braga, home to the magnificent Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary, and explore Ponte de Lima, a picturesque small town, and Viana do Castelo, celebrated for its traditional handicrafts and coastal beauty. Depart from Porto and head south, stopping first in Aveiro, often called the Venice of Portugal, known for its charming canals, colorful moliceiro boats, and elegant monuments. Continue to Bussaco, where you can admire the magnificent Royal Palace of Bussaco, set amid lush forested gardens. Arrive in Coimbra for an overnight stay at the Hotel Vila Galé Coimbra. The following day, explore this unique and historic university city, home to one of Europe’s oldest universities. Coimbra has preserved its centuries-old academic traditions, most famously represented by the black-caped students. Don’t miss the city’s impressive monuments and libraries. Just 16 km south of Coimbra, visit Conímbriga, one of Portugal’s best-preserved Roman archaeological sites, with remarkable mosaics and ruins that reveal the grandeur of ancient times. (B)
Spend the next two nights on the Lisbon seaside coast, staying at the charming Hotel Inglaterra in Estoril — a cozy retreat in a village often called the “Portuguese French Riviera.” During your stay, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the romantic town of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its fairytale palaces, lush gardens, and mountain views. Enjoy dinner in one of its many charming local restaurants. A visit to Lisbon is also a must. Discover its historic monuments and medieval quarters of Alfama and Mouraria, where time seems to stand still. Stroll through the typical streets of Bairro Alto and Madragoa, and spend an evening experiencing Lisbon’s vibrant nightlife. For an authentic cultural experience, dine at a traditional Fado restaurant and listen to this soulful, deeply Portuguese music that tells stories of love and longing. (B)
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and, at a time to suit your departing flight, make your way to Lisbon Airport to return your rental car and begin your journey back home. (B)
